Tuesday 22 October

This Black History Month, join us to discover the story of Thomas Fuller – a brilliant mathematician who was sold into slavery in 1724 aged 10. These cross curricular events will bring together maths and history to celebrate his genius.

Participants will explore the history of Thomas Fuller and take part in mental maths challenges. We’ll ask what mental maths actually means, how the skill is developed and whether it is still useful today. Workshops will last 50 minutes and be held on Zoom.

Nira Chamberlain OBE, founder of Black Heroes of Mathematics, will host the sessions with the Big Ideas Team. Click the buttons below to register for a workshop at a time that suits your class. Get ready to exercise your mental maths muscles…

Everyone is welcome to attend, the mental maths activities will be aimed at upper primary school students.

Any questions? Email maths@big-ideas.org and we will get back to you.

Registration is free thanks to the generosity of the Heilbronn Institute and the London Mathematical Society
