Shehu Umar Hashidu studied Petroleum and Environmental Technology at Coventry University and graduated in 2017. Since graduating they have been working as a HSE Officer. Of their time at Coventry University they said; “It was a remarkable experience and also a period of intense study/research with collaboration with other international students from different parts of the world. The staff were supportive with excellent teaching skills. Professionally, the overall modules covered in the Petroleum and Environmental Technology offered me a unique technical skills to confront the technological and environmental challenges of the oil and gas value chain in the 21st century. Moreover, I was opportune to be the ONLY eligible candidate to be sponsored by the University to sit for NEBOSH exams, where I obtained internationally recognised HSE certificate. These in part has facilitated my appointment as a HSE officer in KEDCO. Personally, over the period of my study I have developed some interpersonal and communication skills that is integral to my success as a career person. I was able to discover some of my hidden and God given talents such the ability to work under pressure (among others) which has partly earned me an overall Distinction in my MSc. Immediately after graduating I got a job offer with Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) as a HSE Officer. At that capacity, within one year I was able to initiate a hazard reporting software to which I was given an MD’s Award by the end of 2018. Consequently, I was elevated to a team lead of the Hazard Management Section of the HSE unit. Team work and commitment was integral to our success in securing two different commendation letter by the MD/CEO. To date our company is the 2nd best in terms of safety ranking in Nigeria".
