GEORGE OKATA

Student Union Internationalisation and Culture Officer

GEORGE OKATA studied MSc Management of Information Systems and Technology at Coventry University and graduated in 2020. Since graduating they have been working as a Student Union Internationalisation and Culture Officer. Of their time at Coventry University they said; My experience during my study in Coventry university was not a smooth one as I encountered a lot of Challenges having coming for the first time as an International student to a new country I knew no one. But what kept me going was the Vision I had for myself and what I wanted to achieve. As a Master's student it comes with a lot of research work and lots of study time which I will say did affect my social life in making friends a bit but one thing I loved about Coventry University was the fact that the lecturers and module leaders are happy to support and always there to help students. My academic experience ended well as I was awarded with a Distinction in Management of Information systems and Technology. Since graduating, Before I was done with my academics, having spotting out the challenges most International students face upon arrival and as well as when they are in Coventry prompted me to make a difference to run for the sabbatical officer role at Coventry University Student union to be able to implement my ideas in giving International students a good study and social life experience doing their academic journey with Coventry University. One of the prospects from my manifesto was to drive student engagement on the existing VYGO platform to match students with buddy mentors to help, support and make them aware of the student support services that the University and the Student union offers to the students and I will say so far the engagement on the online platform to interact and get feedbacks from students has been great. The Knowledge I gained as a Postgraduate student in my field of expertise has equipped me with the skills I need to launch out. Also having the leadership experience and work ethics currently gaining as a Student Leader has helped shaped me personally and my professional ethics.
