Take part in the Great Exhibition² programme this British Science Week
Key Stage 2 and 3 classes in Westminster, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham can register to have a free in-person invention workshop with a scientist or researcher from Imperial College London. Workshops will take place on Wednesday 13th or Thursday 14th March 2024 during British Science Week.
Bring the excitement of science into your classroom with a 1.5 hour workshop where they will build prototypes of inventions to change the world. Eligible classes can apply for one of 20 available workshops here.
A Big Ideas trained facilitator and a volunteer scientist or researcher from Imperial College will come to your class for the workshop.
At the end of the workshops, prototypes from each participating class will be boxed up and taken away ready for exhibiting in the Great Exhibition² tent at the Great Exhibition Road Festival in June 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity for young people and their families to see their ideas and creativity celebrated on a public stage.
During the workshop your class will be:
- Introduced to the ingenuity and invention showcased at the original Great Exhibition of 1851 and the legacy it has inspired
- Led through a creative session to think of inventive solutions to problems they would like to solve
- Provided with a range of craft materials with which to build their prototypes
- Led through a design process of drawing, building and then refining their prototypes

The Great Exhibition² project offers young people in primary and secondary schools in the boroughs surrounding Imperial the opportunity to be scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs of the future. The programme is a partnership between Imperial College, London and Big Ideas.
