Remembering the Battle of the Somme – British Council Resource Pack
Big Ideas worked with the British Council, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme, UCL Institute of Education to develop a schools resource pack to mark the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme in 2016.
The pack contains resources to help students develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the conflict. It covers topics including experiences of the Somme from around the Commonwealth, Pals Battalions, conscription, recruitment and remembrance today. The materials are designed to be flexible and adaptable. They can be used as starting points for individual lessons or activities, or form part of a larger cross- curricular project with a partner school overseas. You can download the pack here.
Big Ideas worked with the British Council as part of their Somme visit on 1 July. 600 students from the UK and France took part in the Somme Ceremony at Thiepval and had the chance to visit a number of CWGC sites on the Somme. Big Ideas supported in the development of the teacher resource pack for this visit.
