The Unremembered story continued this weekend when our partners in India, the British High Commission and the United Services Institution of India, laid the wreath created at Diwali, London at the Imphal Stone of Remembrance marking Imphal75.
The Unremembered: World War One’s Army of Workers was a Big Ideas project run in 2018 to commemorate the members of the Labour Corps who supported the war effort in World War One. Tens of thousands were recruited from the UK, China, India, South Africa, Egypt, Canada, the Caribbean and many other places within the British Empire. Community groups around the country created wreaths commemorating these forgotten heroes. One created at Diwali celebrations in Trafalgar Square was gifted to the British High Commission of India.
The wreath was laid by Squadron Leader [R’td] Rana Chhina at the Centre for Armed Forces Historical Research, USI of India.
Along with the British Army, they have created this informative video explaining the battles of Imphal and Kohima to commemorate the 75th anniversary.
