Stories Behind the Poppy – International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day, join schools across the UK and Canada to celebrate the contribution of Canadian and British women to the armed forces during the World Wars.
Book your free place on Thursday 5th March and join classes for a historical look back at the impact of women on the war effort ahead of International Women’s Day.
Each 45 minute event will be held on Zoom. Events are free for schools from Canada and the UK to attend. Open to pupils 8-14 year olds.
Faith Decontie
Guest Speaker
Faith Decontie is a First Nations, Algonquin and Nakoda-Sioux graduate student from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, Canada. She grew up on a First Nation Algonquin reserve where she had a community-based upbringing.
Faith was awarded the Tammy Chen Memorial Scholarship, 2023-2024. She is currently studying for her Anthropology PhD at Aberdeen University with a Canada UK Foundation scholarship.
At the beginning of her professional career, she worked within First Nations communities and later in the Canadian public service. She is interested in Indigenous ‘game-changers’ – those who dedicate their lives to serving their communities by mobilising policy and working towards an equitable society.
Hayley
Host
Hayley is a performer and workshop facilitator dedicated to creating inclusive, accessible spaces where young people can thrive. Her work is rooted in amplifying diverse voices, championing representation, and making learning engaging for all.
She has hosted inspiring events for Big Ideas, including Black Heroes of Mathematics and Celebrating… Katherine Johnson, speaking to pioneering figures who have shaped our world.
This International Women’s Day, Hayley is excited to engage young people in discovering powerful untold stories about Women in the war.
