India Remembers WWII: veterans’ stories

To mark 75 years since the end of WWII, India Remembers’ young historians are interviewing WWII veterans of the Indian Army.

In the first film, Shefali Oberoi meets Captain H Mohite of the Maratha Light Infantry, also known as the Jangi Paltan. The films will be released here during Remembrance week 2020.

In the second film, Bhanu Gahlot meets Lt Col John Cross, a British veteran of the Indian Army who fought in the Burma campaign. He speaks to her from his home in Katmandu.

Pratap Chhetri meets Subedar Thanseia, veteran of the Assam Regiment for our third film. Subedar Thanseia fought at the Battle of Kohima, one of the great turning points of WW2. He is interviewed in his home in Mizoram.

Mingma Lhamu meets Rifleman Kharga Bahadur Limbu veteran of the 10th Gurkha Regiment for our fourth film. Rifleman Kharga Bahadur Limbu recalls fierce fighting and fallen friends in the Italian campaign.

Adil Chhina meets Group Captain GPS Bakhshi, veteran of the Indian Air Force and the Burma campaign.  He shares his family’s military heritage and recalls a twist of fate which saved his life.
