STEM With Wings: Tiny is Mighty
With Dr Freya Johnson
Date: Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th January 2027
Times: 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM (50 minutes each)
Format: Live, online, and classroom-ready – all you need is paper!
How can we make faster, smaller computers that use less energy?
Meet physicist Dr Freya Johnson, at the frontier of material design and discover her work to make new materials for the computers of the future.
Freya uses a powerful laser to build very thin layers of material, one layer of atoms at a time. These layers are thousands of times thinner than a human hair. Join her live session to find out how scientists design materials like these and why they matter for the technology we use every day.
Free for upper primary and lower secondary classes (ages 8 to 14) across the UK. Book your class’s place now.

Meet The Expert: Dr Freya Johnson
Dr Freya Johnson is a physicist in the Experimental Solid State Physics Group at the Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London. She studies how to make new materials for advanced computing, and is also exploring how artificial intelligence can help scientists make materials more quickly and accurately.
